It s important to choose a color that matches the color of the stained and finished flooring because latex filler doesn t accept stain itself.
Sanding is risky because there s a good chance you ll create a noticeable divot to the outside of your filled knot.
It will take a bit of time to dry but if you like the look of the hole go for it.
I used a elmers brand hard drying wood filler in natural color let dry 8hrs then sanded fine grit then used a black wood touch up pen to color onto the dried filler.

The new stuff just isn t as tight as the older.
